Feng Shui Needs An Update

926F_3Feng Shui is often misinterpreted, misconstrued and maligned. And I totally understand why. It can seem random, hokey and new agey. After all, it has been around for thousands of years and there are dozens and dozens of conflicting schools of interpretation with arbitrary explanations that add to the enormous amount of confusion and lack of believability on the subject. It had a resurgence in the 90’s but most of that is all antiquated and irrelevant drivel now.  That’s why, after a decade of successful work in this field- including research, teaching and hundreds of client consultations- I have sifted through what works and what does not. I have updated, edited and created a system that enables the biggest transformations to occur for my clients. In my consultations,  it’s never about moving your bed, hanging a crystal and calling it a day. In order for change to happen, there must be actions that occur both mentally and physically that dovetail together with the energetic ones in your home. This is Holistic Living. Connecting mind, body, spirit and home all together.

Below are some examples of where I differ from tradition and why:

You Don’t Need Kitschy Imagery To Bring You Good Luck Or Protection.

If you don’t resonate with Foo Dogs and Firecrackers, you will hate having them in your space. And what kind of good energy will that bring you? None. If you like a clean, modern aesthetic or you just don’t connect to these culturally rich symbols, it will piss you off to live in a home that looks like a fast food Chinese restaurant! You must connect to the symbolism in order to generate a genuine energetic shift in your environment.

It Doesn’t Matter Which Direction Your Front Door Faces

So many clients who have read a few books on the subject are nervous or confused because they think their homes should be facing South East or North West or whatever. This theory comes from other directional schools of Feng Shui that I don’t prescribe to. You just can’t move your house. And what may be good for one of the occupants based on their birth sign, may be bad for another in the very same house. This makes no sense to me. But there are many other factors that you can easily change that will affect the good energy coming into your home. Don’t get hung up on where your front door is, just make sure that it’s clean, well lit and opens without difficulty.

Red May Not Be Your Lucky Color

One client told me that she hated the color red but “because it was good Feng Shui” she painted her front door and her bedroom that color. She was miserable about it. “Red is not your lucky color” I told her. Bottom line is, you have to do what innately feels right to you. Color is powerful. It can influence your mood, set the tone for the atmosphere and give you subconscious cues you are not even aware of. If you have a strong reaction to a particular color, try to examine your resistance more deeply. Do you not like red because its a motivational color and you prefer to surround yourself in a calming sea of pastels? Or, do you find that the aggression of red keeps you up at night and is not conducive to a peaceful nights sleep? Listen to your inner guide and find a Feng Shui consultant that understands you and works with your own individual needs.  Your home is not the place for misinterpretations, somebody else’s superstitions or having things you don’t like because that will never bring you good energy, good feelings or good luck.
